Presentation of the impact of new technologies in the excavation of NKUA at Marathon and the use of DELTA MOOC for teaching and training archaeology students to the King and the Queen of the Belgians (3 May 2022)

In 3 May 2022, an Encounter entitled “Connecting past and future. The impact of New Technologies on Archaeology and Heritage” organized by the Belgian Embassy in Greece and the Wallonia – Brussels Federation Government as part of the State Visit of Their Majesties the King and the Queen of the Belgians to the Hellenic Republic, provided to the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Prof. Meletios – Athanasios Dimopoulos and the Director of the Department of Archaeology and History of Art and member of the DELTA project, Assc. Prof. Yiannis Papadatos, the opportunity to present to the royal couple and to high officials of the Belgian state the excavations of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the use of digital technologies in teaching and training students to archaeological excavations.

Assc. Prof. Yiannis Papadatos presented to the King and the Queen of the Belgians the challenges of Marathon excavation and explained the way digital technologies were implemented in order to overcome the difficulties and achieve the main goals of the excavation: archaeological research, education of students of archaeology and increase of public awareness. The DELTA project and the DELTA MOOC was also presented as an example of the adoption of digital technologies in order to combine the physical space of an archaeological excavation with the digital space of online learning, and enhance.
